Essential oils: how to create calm, creativity, and healing in your home

In this hurried world I find comfort in creating spaces in our home that encourage calm, creativity, and healing. Although I don’t mediate per se I have established a daily morning routine or ritual that sets intention for the day. It’s so simple and the best part is that all family members benefit simply by being nearby.

Essential Oil Benefits

  • Diffusing increases humidify in the air and infuses your air with the healing power of plants.
  • Purify the air, reduce mold and harmful microorganisms, boost the immune system, reduce stress, and provide safer, more earth-friendly cleaning solutions.

I diffuse upstairs in our bedroom/bathroom area and also downstairs in the great room.  Lavender mixes are calming and best used during a long soak in the tub or around bedtime.

If you decide to explore the world of essential oils it can be a bit overwhelming.  Start by purchasing one or two oil blends and go from there.  Once you get a feel for what you like, experiment with your own blends in your diffuser or if you are a DIY type, make your own!

Linen Spray

Here’s what you’ll need.

  • Small spray bottle
  • Jar with tight fitting lid
  • 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) witch hazel
  • 5 or 6 drops lavender essential oil
  • 3 ounces (6 tablespoons) water

In the jar, combine the witch hazel and lavender essential oil. Shake well for about 20 seconds. Essential oils will not distribute into the water on their own and require a carrier.  The witch hazel acts as a carrier and allows the essential oil to mix into the water.  Open the lid again and add the water.  Give it a good shake and then pour in to your spray bottle.  Spray on freshly washed bed linens.

Essential Oils in the Bath

  • 1 cup Epsom Salt
  • 5 to 10 drops essential oil

Essential Oils for Cleaning Purposes

This Bissell wet/dry VAC is amazing! It vacuums and damp mops all at once and is super easy to clean.  I add about 5 drops of my favorite essential oil to the water canister while I clean my hardwood and marble floors. Check my cleaning highlights to see me using the Bissell.

My favorite blends contain citrus, lavender, eucalyptus and peppermint.  I diffuse each of them at various times of the day.  Orange and lemon helps awakens the senses giving you a sunny disposition and positive outlook for the day. Eucalyptus and peppermint stimulate and cool the senses and lavender calms and balances the mind.

  1. Thanks Leslie for the EO info and link. Have you found a diffuser that the light and bell will turn off completely when the water tank is empty? I would like one for the bedroom that does not wake me up with light or bell sound.

    1. Hi Karen, You are welcome! There are no sounds with either one of my diffusers. The SERENE (link is shown at the bottom of the blog post) diffuser allows you to set the diffusing time to a set time and you can adjust the lighting. Hope this helps! xox
