How to make a French Elder Cocktail

The French Elder Cocktail is one of our favorite cocktails.  Serve it in the summer or wintertime garnished with an edible flower and around the holidays with a lemon twist!

Edible flowers are a pretty addition to salads, desserts, and can even be used to infuse cocktails.  The French, Austrains, and Europeans produce an extract from the elderflower blossom and then turn it into a liqueur.

When we are trying to decide on a cocktail to serve our guests, there’s a discussion about whether to serve something that we know the ladies will enjoy vs. the guys.  Our French Elder Cocktail has the something for everyone and is always a hit.  The ladies love the bubbles and the guys like the Gin or Vodka.  The flower on top is such a pretty touch!

You’ll need a few ‘bar’ tools:

  1. Start with chilled champagne flutes.  I usually put mine in the freezer while I mix the ingredients.
  2. Add ice to your shaker and add fresh squeezed lemon juice, Gin or Vodka, and Elderflower Cordial.
  3. Give everything a good shake for about 20 to 30 seconds and pour into two champagne flutes.
  4. Top with Prosecco and garnish with an edible flower or a twist of lemon.
  5. Serve with your favorite cheesy appetizer to tide your guests over until dinner.

The French Elder Cocktail can be made ahead of time so it’s a great option if you are entertaining a larger group.  If you are preparing your mix ahead of time, put your shaker (minus the ice) in the refrigerator to get cold.  When it’s time to pour, your mix will be cold and all you have to do is top with Prosecco.
