I always crave warmth and sunshine this time of year so when my husband asked me to pack sundresses for an island vacation I was so excited! Besides a couple dresses, I packed a few more of my favorite wardrobe staples: denim, a warm cardigan, hat, knits, and a straw tote. The coastal temperatures can get cool at night and be prepared for a thunderstorm in the evening!
Destination: The Outer Banks, NC
The Outer Banks in NC has been on my bucket list for years and when we found out that family would (also) be there, it was obviously the perfect time to go. I’d heard about the uninhabited white sandy beaches and pastel beach houses and couldn’t wait to see them in person. Everything was just as I imagined it and them some. I couldn’t decide which I liked more, a shingle-face or pastel colored home! Both were so charming and many are named like the home above. How charming is that?! Some of the homes are literally ON the waters edge making them seem vulnerable during a hurricane. They must be sturdy and as you can see they are all built on stilts or elevated foundations.
Have you seen the movie Nights in Rodanthe? This is the home it was filmed in!
What to Wear: Sundresses For An Island Vacation
Packing for this vacation was so much fun. My daughter and I both chose dresses from the Gal Meets Glam Collection. The style was the perfect mix of pretty and practical. When I purchase a dress I consider more than just the cut and style, I think about how I will feel in the dress. These dresses are feminine and pretty, perfect sundresses for an island vacation and very southern feel. The easy, comfortable style allowed us to wear our dresses on bikes, walk on the beach, and then out to dinner. We also like that these dresses work with flats and sneakers. More women are wearing sneakers with their dresses and it’s a fun look! Athletic shoes come in all colors and styles making it easy to find something that works with any outfit. I found blush colored sneakers and wore them with my dress! A wrap around espadrille works too and can also be comfortable for walking.
If you haven’t hopped on a beach bike in a dress, it’s so much fun! My daughter is wearing the Ellie dress with lace up flats, a comfortable choice and perfect color match, and also she carried a straw clutch.
I chose the Judith dress and carried a straw tote. This dress is structured, yet soft and I love the eyelet! The Clare V tote is my favorite summer bag. These totes come in a variety of colors and two sizes.

I mentioned cardigans earlier and wanted to show you this one that my daughter is wearing from Anthropologie. It’s SO cozy, warm, and the perfect choice for our vacation. If this one is sold out there are similar styles and colors available!
Besides using golf carts for transportation, taking a ferry ride to a new destination is a must. Make sure to hold onto your hats and bring a warm cardigan. I like the length and extra warmth that this one provides.
We feel rested and recharged. There is something about the ocean air and the sound of waves that frees the mind and creates a sense of calmness. I can’t wait to go back!
