Beginning in the springtime, we all like to open our windows and doors to let the fresh air in. Unfortunately, with that comes pests that can put a damper on otherwise fun summer day.

How to manage pests:

Most of us would rather not use toxic pest sprays in or outdoors. I’ve used essential oils in my home for years and I believe it helps with a multitude of things, and repelling bugs is one of them. My advice is to stay ahead of the game. For example, if you are seeing a few ants coming in, get out a cotton ball with a few drops of peppermint and dab around the area. If you see more ants, try adding a few drops to 4 ounces of water and spray the affected area. Vinegar is another one to try!

There are a few essential oils that can act as a natural bug repellent indoors. These oils can be used on or near areas in the home that attract insects like mosquitoes and ants.

Here’s a list of my favorites:

• Lavender: Add to cleaning products, diffuse, or use in homeade bug sprays.
• Peppermint: This is one of my favorites! Use a few drops on a cotton ball and whip corners that ants might have access to. If it’s a larger area, try using a spray.
• Citronella: I use citronella candles outdoors for help manage mosquitoes.
• Tea Tree oil: This oil repels insects and also has antimicrobial properties that help keep surfaces clean. I like to add this to the solution I make to wash my floors.

Besides using in affected areas, I routinely add a few drops to the water in my water before I clean my floor. My favorite combination is either peppermint or lemon mixed with tea tree oil. I use 2-4 drops in my bucket. That’s it, and the house smells so good afterwards.
