I remember standing in the kitchen with Grammy decades ago watching her make apple bread pudding. She said “here’s the secret ingredient” and walked over to a cabinet and pulled out a bottle of brandy. She poured some in a glass for herself and then added a healthy amount ;) to the egg and milk mixture.
I later learned she added it to a few of her holiday cookie dough recipes too. No wonder the cookies were so delicious!
Grammy's Apple Pudding Recipe
A nostalgic holiday recipe!
Ingredients
- 1 loaf day old Brioche
- 6 Tbsp butter
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 3 green apples
- 4 eggs
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1/4 cup whipping cream
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup brandy
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Slice and pull apart brioche until it's in small pieces. Place on a rimmed cookie sheet and toast for 10 minutes.
- Slice and dice apples, set aside.
- Add butter to a ho skillet and stir until bubbly.
- Add granulated and brown sugar. Stir until incorporated. Add the chopped apples and cinnamon. Continue stirring until golden brown.
- Turn off heat. Add Brandy and stir.
- In a large bowl, whisk eggs. Add milk and cream. Stir until mixed.
- Add bread to the egg mixture and then the apples.
- Toss until everything is mixed.
- Grease a 9 by 12 inch baking dish. Add the apple mixture. At this point you can refrigerate overnight or pop right in the oven.
- Bake for about 45 minutes. Allow to sit for about 15 minutes prior to slicing.
- Top with whipping cream.
