Easy Ghost Cinnamon Rolls

As soon as we near Halloween I feel like the clock starts – in just a few weeks it will be the start of the Holiday season, a busy time for all of us. That said, I try to take little short cuts when I can and these Ghost Cinnamon Rolls are one of those treats that can be made quickly without using yeast or sour dough starter.

What you’ll need:

I use Immaculate Cinnamon Rolls because they seem the most like homemade and can be re-rolled to form a ghost. When I tried making these for the first time, the store didn’t have the Immaculate Cinnamon Rolls so I bought a different product. When I opened them, I noticed that I couldn’t re-roll them. They were like little pucks with cinnamon on top. I had to toss them and go make another trip out to the market.

For the ghost eyes and mouth, I tried a couple things. What I believe works best is using this Natural Frosting Kit (dye free) if you want to draw on the cinnamon roll. Alternatively you could add these darling googling eyes. If you are looking to keep this idea simple – go with the google eyes. All you need to do is put them on top, no drawing necessary. Both ideas are fun for the kids!

You’ll need an 8 ounce block of cream cheese for the frosting. The Immanculate Cinnamon Rolls come with icing – don’t use that! You’ll need the cream cheese icing so the ghosts will be white.

Tips:

Watch me make the ghosts here! Slowly unfold the cinnamon roll. Leave the right end curled under facing left. For the left side, unfold and reverse the direction of the end so it matches the other side. Bring the center upwards to form a ghost-like shape.

Bake as directed. While baking, make the cream cheese frosting. Remove the ghosts from the oven and and frost. Add the eyes and a mouth if you’d like and then serve! You can also use chocolate chips for eyes if you’d like.

These Quick Ghost Cinnamon Rolls are best eaten warm and ‘just frosted’ however you can also microwave later and they are still delicious.

Ingredients

  • One package of ready-to-bake cinnamon rolls*
  • 1 (8-ounce) package of cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup confectioners (powdered) sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 3 tbsp maple syrup
  • ghost eyes or food coloring*

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 for 375 degrees F. Follow food manufacturers instructions.
  2. Prepare the dough: Remove the cinnamon rolls and set the icing aside.
  3. Form the ghost shape: Unroll the spiral of the dough. To form a ghost shape, fold the bottom of the roll into three small pleats to create the ghost's tail. Pinch the folds firmly to help them hold their shape.
  4. Bake the rolls: Place the ghosts on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. For store-bought dough, bake for less time than instructed on the package, as they will cook faster due to the shape.
  5. Add frosting: Once the ghost cinnamon rolls are baked and slightly cooled, spread the white cream cheese frosting over the tops.
  6. Decorate the faces: Use black icing or candy eyeballs.
To make the cream cheese frosting: Add cream cheese (room temp) to a large bowl. Add 1/2 cup powdered sugar, 1 tsp vanilla, and 3 tbsp maple syrup. Beat until smooth. Smooth over cinnamon rolls when cooled slightly. Add eyes and mouth using icing or googly eyes.
