Great Room Update: How to Install Shiplap

I’m finally posting the installation of our great room shiplap!  If you have been following along, we turned a small space off our garage into a mud room here and put shiplap on the walls to practice before starting the great room.  It was a bit of a fiasco (you’ll have to read the post) but we completed the project and were pleased with the end result.  I promised I’d share step-by-step instructions for shiplap installment so here you go!  You might hear that this is an easy weekend DIY.  If you have the tools, supplies, and the time to give this your all then maybe you can get it done in a weekend.  Both projects took us several weekends to complete.

(starting point)

Great Room Update: How to Install Shiplap

  1. Measure area of wall and determine how much shiplap is needed. The pieces we used for this room very long so we arranged for delivery.
  2. Locate studs and mark the location on the wall.
  3. Use a good quality leveler!  Cut shiplap to desired length and mount to studs making sure everything is level.
  4. We started at the top and worked down.
  5. After all the shiplap has been nailed in, mount vertical side moldings where necessary.
  6. Repair mounting nail holes with drywall speckle.
  7. Lightly sand entire wall with fine grain sandpaper.
  8. Paint your shiplap (we added a second coat)

Tools (affiliate links attached)

Brad nail gun and compressor
Dual compound 12 inch miter saw
48 inch level
Right angle square
Palm sander
Ladder
Beer (my husband added this;)

The shiplap makes the room look larger and I’m loving the warmth the wood adds.  I’ve restyled the fireplace to include a decorative vase,  books, and a basket.  The picture over the fire place was taken by a local photographer and it has sentimental value to me.
