Leslie’s morning routine

We all have unique daily needs and know what works best for us. For me, having a consistent sleep/rise time as well as meeting my nutritional needs is a priority.

Depending on what chapter of life you’re in, mornings can be complicated and sometimes downright chaotic. Having grown children now allows for an easier time however we are still needing to get the dogs out and prepare for our work day.

Remember we are dynamic creatures and what once worked for us may no longer meet our needs. Embrace the chapters of change and try to stay positive and have gratitude.

I know breakfast is important however I’m not really hungry at 7am so I start slow. I’ve been sipping a warm mug of lemon water followed by coffee (mainly decaff) in the morning for decades.

If I’m not exercising, I blend up a smoothie and take whatever supplements I’m needing. I recognize the need for protein to help build muscle and balance blood sugar so my goal is to get 30 grams of protein in the morning.

If I’m not blending a smoothie, I have whole milk Greek yogurt with Purely Elizabeth Granola (I like the pumpkin and the chocolate) along with sliced banana and blueberries. If I’m feeling like cereal or a snack that has protein, fiber, and no sugar, I will add a serving of Catalina Crunch to my yogurt.

Weekends are always eggs and toast. Variety is good and I believe that enjoying some foods that may not be as healthy is okay in moderation. It’s what we do most, not all of the time that matters.

If you’d prefer to make your own granola, try my recipe here!

If I’m running, I sip my coffee while I get dressed and hold off on breakfast until I get back. If my body feels like it needs a little nutrition, I’ll sip AG1 with my coffee. My preference is always to exercise in the morning however if we have early appointments, our workout gets pushed to the evening. An evening run followed by weight training pushes our dinner out, not my preference but it’s better to get the exercise in even if it’s late in my opinion.

If I need a snack prior to lunch I grab a few roasted almonds, walnuts, or Brazil nuts and almost daily, indulge in a bite of Hu chocolate.

Exercise

When I run in the wintertime I layer up starting with thermals. Next layer: Left on Friday leggings are my favorite. They are so soft and flattering. If it’s below 35 degrees then I wear wool leggings. A light weight jacket that is warm and not too bulky is essential. Over the jacket I wear puffer vest. If I am walking I wear this puffer jacket and a beanie. Weight training is important. I fit a full body workout in 3 or 4 times a week in addition to the running or walking.

Skin and Make Up

In the morning I splash my face with cold water in the morning and follow with CE Ferrulic, a vitamin C formulation that helps combat free radical damage and keeps my skin lipid barrier healthy during the cold winter months. Next I add a couple drops of Dr. Diamond Metacine’s serum, Chebula Extreme Cream from True Botanicals, and finally Slip Tint or Elta MD for sun protection.

With regards to make up I am a minimalist. I like a product from Merit called The Minimalist. It’s not a liquid foundation or a concealer, but it’ll replace both in your makeup bag. I use under eyes and around the nose to even skin tone. I finish with Ilia Hydrating Lip Balm. If you’d like to see what else is in my make up bag, check here.
