How to keep your lilacs fresh longer
Although lilacs won’t open much once you bring them home, it’s best to clip them when they are about 3/4 fully bloomed. That said, I recommend if you can get them at any phase, consider yourself lucky and enjoy what you have.
Commonly asked questions about lilac
Why do lilacs die so quickly?
If lilacs aren’t pruned enough, they won’t live as long. It’s important to cut dead branches off as they leech nutrients and water from the rest of the tree.
How do you trim a lilac bush?
Snip (dead-head) blooms, leaving the stem and leaves in place. If new growth is present, leave it for a second blooming that could take place later in the summer.
How to keep your lilacs fresh longer
Today I thought I’d share how I clip and care for my lilacs to improve their longevity. Just a few simple steps will help extend their life so you can enjoy them longer.
- Choose your favorite vase. I decided on a beautiful crock but these lilac would also look pretty in a pitcher.
- Clip your branches: In real life, things are crooked and not perfect, right? I am starting with beautiful, imperfect branches.
- Remove all the leaves that will be submerged in water.
- Cut the branches to fit your vessel. Use small scissors to make a vertical cut in the branch. This will enable the lilac to drink lots of water.
- Fill your vase, pitcher, or crock with lilac and add a few branches for greenery if you’d like.
- Give your lilac fresh water everyday.
