Hello Friends! Today I am sharing a nostalgic holiday table using my Grandmother’s heirloom china. Back in the roaring 20’s my Grandmother had quite the social circle so I’m not surprised that when she decided to tie the knot, dishes for entertaining was top on her list. Life was more formal back then and it was common for women to receive a full set of dishes for entertaining. For my Grandmother this meant a setting for 12. That’s a lot of dishes! Over the years I’ve broken a few pieces, but that’s okay. I know my Grandmother is looking down and smiling.
The gold and cream in the dishes works perfectly with my neutral palette.
Nostalgic Holiday Table: Step-by-Step Instructions
- Begin with a table runner. I started with a gray table runner from Target and added faux garland.
- Use your favorite vintage pieces and layer the dishes for a simple, elegant look.
- Add a fun linen. My napkins are from Studio Mcgee and I absolutely love them! I purchase only a few new items for each holiday and then I try to reuse what I have from years past. I used the same linens and chargers for my Fall table setting.
- Add different textures and something from nature. I used a satin ribbon from my favorite Etsy shop (here) and also added the sparkly pinecones that my friend Julie did the tutorial on. If you missed it, click here to read the blog post.
- Finish with your favorite candles and votive holders to create a soft glow.

Brass candle holders are classic look festive on any holiday table. I like the narrow as opposed to square tapers. These are my favorite and then I always glue the candles in. Who doesn’t love mercury glass during the holidays? The small votive holders are great for the table because they aren’t as intrusive and easy to move when the food comes out.

Leslie, you are so fortunate to have the china service of twelve from your grandmother. I have a few pieces and treasure them. Your table setting is lovely and looks so pretty in your home. Well done, beautiful tour.
